Anyone else subscribe to HM? I have on and off over the past ten years, I just get frustrated at how long it takes them to send the magazine through the mail. So, recently I've just been buying my copy at the Christian bookstore which tends to have no problem getting their issues. Very curious... Maybe I have issues!

Anyhoo...I usually read my copy of HM cover to cover, including the ads. I never did that with CCM when I was a subscriber (over ten years ago). Am I weird? I mean...I know I'm weird, but is that action weird?

I got it as a continuation of my print CCM mag subscription but I like it much better. It covers more bands with styles I'd like although nowadays screamo is the the new carbon copy band! These record companies are spitting these bands out by the truckloads and they all sound alike.

But between its pages I find some diamonds.

They have the guts to interview artists like H.I.M. which are not Christian and Everclear which are not fully accepted into the CCM folds.

I also subscribe to HM and enjoy it very much, I basically got it because I like to keep up to date with bands and up incoming bands as well. Doug Van Pelt does a great journalist and I really enjoy it when he interviews bands who aren't necessarily Christian or labeled so. I love how he just throws the question out there to them on "What do you think of Jesus Christ?" He wrote a good book called Rock Stars on God, and interviewed bands like Green Day to Alice Cooper. It was taken from the magazine section where he does his "So & So Says" interviews. I find his boldness and casual way of just fitting the question in there, to be refreshing and inspiring.

I remember 7Ball magazine! I was a subscriber and found many good artists on their sampler CDs. I thought it was RIP but about 2 years ago I went to a music festival here in Idaho and there was a 7Ball booth! I picked up a free copy but have not seen it anywhere since. 7Ball never carried the depth or breadth of Christian rock that HM did, but it was a fun little zine. I would subscribe again if I found it.

I agree his religious questions for H.I.M. were a real hoot when I read their answers. It made them uncomfortable and I'm sure they never expected a question like that coming at them. They were forved to think of HIM, the great I AM in Jesus, even if just for a little while!!

So true, and it's interesting to hear what their understanding or the exposure the artists have had to the gospel. As a result of the interview you can only hope that they will think about the conversation and take with them a desire to know more.

BTW - they also publish a zine called Heaven's Metal. For those who like bands old and new to the Christian Metal scene. Doesn't cost much.

Thanks for that info! I'd probably enjoy the older bands because the new ones all sound the same to me.

I remember back when HM was Heavens Metal, I liked it back then but then they started heading in the punk and ska bands and then emo and such and I just stopped caring.

they needed a wider audience. Plus so many bands are not just metal these days. emo-core and a lot of hardcore is based in punk.

I heard HM isn't sold in northwestern book store. true? I never go to that store..

Yeah, but when I got an issue with MxPx on the cover and then looked over at the TV which my little sister had on MTV and the video for "Chick Magnet" was playing ... I knew there was a problem there. :P
