Our new daughter, 1 year 10 months, was brought home from the children's shelter 2 weeks ago. I noticed she had head lice so we purchased a shampoo and treated her for 2 days. Last Monday night I noticed she had eggs again! I repeated the treatment for 2 days but she still has it. My husband borrowed the shelter's metal comb and by the advice of another family today I tried a treatment of Vaseline. It was a disaster! I then tried to wash it out with Axion dish soap, didn't work. Hubby bought Dawn, no success. Hubby went back and brought home baby oil. 2 more washings with Dawn, didn't work...although it did help break the Vaseline, now she has really greasy hair. Next I tried baking soda, baking soda and shampoo mix...still not out. After baby was exhausted she had a nap. After dinner I tried baby powder and corn starch and washed with baby wash. Having some success...75-80% out.

Anyone else ever had this situation???? UGH!!!

If you give it a couple of days, it will probably just rub off on her crib sheets. If you're worried about the crib sheets not coming clean, maybe have a something that is destined to become a rag under her head for a while.

Meh.

Messes happen.

Babies are cute anyways... I say don't torture her if you don't need to.

Well, I'm glad to tell you that you can get rid of headlice by applying any hair conditioner, leaving it on, thoroughly nit-combing through every part of the head just once a day, then washing it out, and then dry nit-combing it through a second time each day. You have to be thorough but it should be relatively easy/quick on a baby's head.

Just wash the hair with baby shampoo, gently pat the hair with a towel to remove excess water, and apply the conditioner all over, especially behind the ears and at the back of the head. Then take your nit-comb and work your way over the whole head, cleaning the comb on some kitchen paper after every wipe. If the nit-comb is fine enough, it will remove eggs as well as live lice.

I used to dry nit-comb my children's hair in the morning and then wash their hair in the evening. If I didn't have time to wash their hair in the evening, I'd dry nit-comb it again. All lice gone within 14 days of continuously doing this, without the need for bought treatments (I'd continue doing the dry combing twice a day for the next 7-14 days too, just to make sure no eggs were missed). Even with bought treatments you still have to use the nit-comb afterwards, so why not just use it in the first place! I've found the plastic nit-combs work as well as any, though the finer the teeth, the better.

The other thing, with a baby, is to cut the hair really short - it will make it easier to see any lice.

Oh and funny girl, you will need to treat yourself and all other members of your houseshold as well.
Otherwise you all could keep spreading the lice between yourselves (and the baby). That's another reason why it's best just to use conditioner and a nit-comb - it works out so much cheaper than bought lice products.

we had a big problem when dd was in kindergarten. The only thing that worked was Dawn. But I was told it had to be the original blue - did you use blue Dawn? I know it can about make you crazy!

I'm sure you probably know this, but you have to simultaneously wash all bedding, towels, stuffed animals, etc., and vacuum all carpets upholstery that the poor child has come in contact with. A colony of lice can grow from just a few leftover eggs -if they have something live to attach to.

Because my kids are in school this year for the first time after 5 years of homeschooling, lice is one word that strikes fear into my heart. They go to a Christian school that is run by our church, and two years ago they had to close the school for 3 days because the epidemic was so bad.

I had a school nurse tell me this year that lice have become mutant and stronger over the years, and it takes a pretty heavy dose of something to get rid off it. She suggested that even as a preventive measure, to go buy shampoo made of Tea Tree Oil (you can find it at health food stores.) The lice hate the stuff and will stay far from it. My kids use it a couple of times a week.

Okay - my head is itching now.............

You can also put toys, blankets, etc. in airtight plastic bags for two weeks to get rid of them that way. I really have serious reservations about using any of the chemical treatments for lice on anyone--especially babies. I know that olive oil works, but I'd definitely try the conditioner first. The important thing is to be consistent in combing and yes, treat everyone in the family.

What the conditioner does is coat the hair so that the lice lose their "grip" and can be more easily combed out. My children are 19 and 15, and my dd caught nits at school a number of times. I tried the chemical products and nothing worked as well as the conditioner. The conditioner is both cheaper and kinder to the skin - and that's especially important for a baby or young child.

Yep. Lice tend to like clean hair because it's easy to grip. The slipperier (?) the better. The chemicals may kill lice, but they also strip hair so any that are left easily hold on.

Yep, everything was washed & vacuumed yesterday.

@Mrs X, I went to the shelter 2 weeks and a day ago per the request of the director. My little baby, now 7 months, needed to be there as the physcologist was coming with the grandparents of the 2 oldest, 5 & 2 1/2, for a review. She also thought their attorney may be coming and want to see all 4 children together. I waited patiently in the office with the baby hoping to speak to the grandparents on the wearabouts of the mother. Then, to my astonishment, everyone left and I couldn't believe I'd missed everyone. By divine appointment the attorney forgot to have something signed and I began to question him. He's in the department of custody for the government here! I asked if a volunteer could adopt one of their children under their care even if they weren't 'approved'? He said yes and he began to say that the 2 oldest would be going to live with their grandparents on their father's side but no one had asked for the 2 babies and would we consider adopting them both so as not to separate the family? I then called my husband who came to the shelter to speak with him too. So that day, he sent them both home with us promising to send custody papers the following week. Unfortuneately when I called to follow up a week later he said he had a problem. The grandparents of the little girl, on the father's side, are now petitioning for her and my baby. I told him that the father was not registered but I think someone told them to request them both and they'd have a better chance of getting her.

I felt peace and after our conversation & knew we need to still do what he told us to do to be able to adopt them. We've hired an attorney to help us get everything together.

That's awful! What kind of life would it be for a baby to be adopted with his sister just because they really wanted her. That's twisted. I pray this works out best for both of them.

Thank you for seeing through that csl7037. My husband and I had gone up to the shelter to get the sister the first day we knew about her but when we learned there are 4 children we felt we physically weren't able. I've got to tell you that she's a challenge. 1 year 10 months with no stablility. She's not her brother and very difficult at times. Her brother has been with us most of his life and although difficult at the shelter an absolute joy to our lives. He's perfect now :) We regonize how far this little girl has come in just 2 weeks and a day and hope that once she learns the bourndries, she'll be a joyful little girl too. She's completely attached to my husband and coming around to me but not as affectionately. We think it's because there were so many women and girls at the shelter and no men in her life. It's especially hard for me, I've been the only girl in my family for 20 years!

Oh, and not only that, the attorney is making the grandparents take the 2 year old brother even though they haven't asked for him. Even though they are full brothers. In my heart, I wish I could take them all but it's really hard now with the 2 babies. Jesus help us!

Hi everyone I'm Anna mom of seven from romania. I'm very happy to have found your forum as I'm a Christian mom raising my children for the Lord.

As far as the lice here is what mom taught me - you can prevent the eggs and the lice from multiplying with VINEGAR. I tested it! You can dilute it with water and rinse baby's hair - non toxic and kills eggs before you know they're there.
Hope it helps!

My son "mentioned" that lice is going around. With our girls we did some of the stuff posted and it was a LOT of work. With our boys we just shaved their heads. That's the way to go if possible.

My husband had lice and his mom shaved his head and he was mortified.

He's made me promise we won't ever do that to a son if we have one.

Do you leave it in for a while or just kind of wash with it?

I would leave it in if I was sure there are nits in her hair. Otherwise I just rinse after rinsing shampoo with water 'cause it's good prevention.
I wouldn't shave their head either

funny_girl how is your little girl doing?
