There is no requirement to viewing the movie.

I saw it, and if you can kind of focus on what Christ did, then it is moving. But there is a lot of the extra doctrine in there too (e.g., the rag that was used to wipe Jesus' face and then has his face imprinted on it). Some of my friends didn't like that Mary played such a big role, but I just focused on the idea that as Jesus' mother, obviously his suffering would affect her. My MIL hasn't seen it. She said she didn't think she could handle the graphic-ness.

Personally, I like the Jesus movie better (the one that is used a lot on the mission field). It isn't "great cinema" but I think it's more in line with true Scripture.

Why didn't you like it, and why won't you see it again, Cin? I'm curious. In my opinion, THE PASSION is a brilliant film, the most accurate portrayal of Christ's crucifixion I've ever seen. Of course, no film will ever be completely accurate, but THE PASSION comes as close to the Biblical record as possible. I have a few minor (notice I said MINOR) issues with some of Mel's theology, but on the whole, the movie is Biblically accurate. In case there are those of you that will read this and reply, I don't want to start a theological debate here on those issues, OK? I think we each have our own views and we should respect them. Every Christian needs to see this film at least once as a reminder of what He did for us. I think we lose perspective on the price that was paid on Calvary, and sometimes we need to be shaken up and reminded of that price. We can't just shovel it off and not think about it. Again, just my opinion here.

chosen i can only just put one part in to explain my reasons i say is unbiblical.

satan was displayed as a woman in it. Jesus was shown bowing before said woman in the movie. that was as far from not being in the bible as can be.

'saw it when it came out in the theater and it was very hard to watch and I can imagine how much pain Jesus suffered for us. I bought the DVD when it first came out and has not opened it and watched it again. 'will probably watch it this year with our son now that he's a bit older.

It was too much for me. I don't go and see violent movies. Pretty much everything I watch is a chick flick, family film, or animated.

You don't have to see it. Don't feel bad. I saw it and got some things from it but I wasn't that impressed. I liked the Jesus film the best, when it comes to movies about Jesus. Of course, the gospels are still the best rendition in trying to portray someone who it is so hard to portray in a movie.

Great movie!

I didn't watch it for the deep, theological meanings or errors. I don't think that is what it's about. It is just a stark portrayal of the payment made for sin. Plain and simple.

Is it violent? Yes. Is it horrifying? Yes. Is it gut-wrenching? Yes.

I really don't think this movie even came close to what it was really like, though. The Bible says Jesus was beaten so badly that you couldn't even tell he was a man. No make-up job could accurately protray that.

I thought, overall, the movie did a great job of showing the physical, mental and emotional agony that Jesus endured to save us.

He was? I know he was played by a woman but I had no idea it was a woman until I saw pics of the cast.

Some of the elements are pretty disturbing, but it's very well-done. I've seen it a few times. I don't have theological problems with it and I'm sure the real crucifixion was even more disturbing.

I'd put in the same category as "Shindler's List" and "Hiroshima." Sometimes disturbing things are necessary, but I don't like to be disturbed too often.

Actually I have the movie and I can only watch it like once a year around Easter and sometimes not even that often. I didn't really like the Jesus movie it did not move me as much as The Passion did. I think The Passion did pretty well at giving details of what Jesus went through. Although it could never compare to the reality of what He really did go through no one can make such a film because we were not there. But I think this movie got it down pretty good and even inspired Tobymac to write his song The Slam. It really made me be even more thankful for what Jesus went through to give me eternal life.

I thought it was a good movie, and pretty much agree with PHmosh1's post. It made me cry a lot, the movie portrays a lot of suffering. But I think it was good for me to watch it. I haven't seen the Jesus movie.

I thought it was brilliantly ambitious, and wanted it to succeed, but ultimately I didn't much like it. Like the first 15 minutes in the garden are good, but it's all down hill from there. There were just too many cheesy bits for me to like much--the CGI demon when Jesus is thrown over the bridge, the incredibly obvious depiction of Satan (I've always preferred "The Last Temptation of Christ's" depiction of Satan as an innocent looking little girl), the cheesy slow motion and vaguely arabic chanting (think LOTR), and, ultimately, the degree of torture that Jesus is subjected to went from bad, to horrifying, to ludicrous, to ultimately mind numbingly boring just because it's obvious that no human could have survived it--but even if they could have, this doesn't make it work as a film or particularly fun to watch, as it just goes on and on and on, hammering home the same basic points over and over and over. Gibson focuses on the torture with all the pornographic fascination of a snuff film, and I just didn't see the point in the end.

But ultimately I think it's biggest flaw was that it never humanized Christ enough as a character, to the point that when the final hour of nothing but sheer torture kicks in, I really didn't feel anything for him emotionally. The last half was basically just torture porn starring Jesus.

I much would have preferred his intitial idea of filming it in it's original dialect WITHOUT subtitles. This would have been brilliant I think, but it would have required a severe reworking of the film to make it basically function as a silent film. As it is, I don't think the script was strong enough for it to work on that level, which might be why Gibson abandoned that idea and ended up taking a more conventional approach.

For the best movie about Jesus, see instead Pier Paolo Pasolini's "The Gospel According to St Matthew." He was a gay, marxist, atheist, but despite this he remains true to the gospel (all the dialogue is taken directly from the Bible). But what I think his distance from Christianity provided him was that he set out to make a GOOD FILM from the gospels, rather than an Evangelical tool. Which is perhaps why all the best Christian films are is usually made by non Christians.

But I digress.

The entire things on youtube, if anyone cares: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9VfziANKWY&feature=related

It's so bizarre to hear statements like this. When it first came out I kept hearing a bunch of my Christian friends saying after they saw it, "Wow, I had no idea Jesus went through so much" --as if the film were a documentary or Mel Gibson is somehow the new prophet of our age with a direct line to God, knowing exactly how things went down.

The film is an adaptation like any other-with all the flaws and benefits of any adaptation. It's not Gospel.

it certainly isnt with the fact Gibson had soft porn stars playing in it and the language they so readily offered.

when gets to jesus having his right eye closed throughout the movie and the Bible calling upon the Anti-Christ as having only his left eye. so many things are Un-Biblical and utterly demonic in this movie.

Satan was played by an actress(although I think the voice was a male). Nowhere in the film was Satan called a woman. Also Christ did not bow before Satan. He was praying to God and sorry to disappoint you but that IS in the bible.

It seems as though your real problem with the film is the fact the Mel Gibson is a Catholic.

I personally enjoyed the Passion of the Christ. I saw it the day it came out in the theatres, and found myself literally weeping through the last half hour or so of the film, seeing a vivid portrayal of what Christ did for me. In regards to the 'extra bits' that Mel Gibson added in, I didn't have a problem with them. As a Christian, I based my theology on the Bible only, and the Passion wasn't meant to school us in doctrine. Is it violent? Yes. But the crucifixion was bloody and violent, and I think most likely even worse than what was portrayed in this movie.

God 'n' Guns:
I'm curious about your comment:

First of all, I personally think you're reading too much into the Jesus character having his eye closed in the movie. But I would like to know what Scripture you think talks about the antichrist as only having one eye, and also what things in the movie were demonic? Looking forward to your response.
