Do we have to pay for someone who is giving us a lift to go somewhere - say 3-hour drive by car if they are going to the same destination anyway? I don't really mind picking up someone I trust when I am going to the same place and destination for a journey of 3-hour drive and would not expect any charge for gas whatsoever and find it quite weird when people ask for $ for gas when they give us a lift to go somewhere with distance! What is your take upon this topic as Christians?

As a Christian? Are you serious? Christian or not, if somebody's going to the same place as I am I think they've got a lot of nerve asking for money. I'd probably offer to split the cost anyway, but to ask is just bad manners.

My view on this is it is just common courtesy to pay expenses if somebody gives me a ride. They don't have to have me along and they are doing me a favor if they do. I would be more inclined to tip fast food workers (but they don't accept) as i believe they are underpaid for the work they do. Vehicle expense involves far more than gasoline in the tank. But then again i am not struggling from paycheck to paycheck like many are. I keep my living expenses low so cash flow is not usually a problem with me.

I feel that giving them something towards the gas money is a good thing to do, especially if there is distance involved in the drive, even if they would be going to the same place anyway. I don't however feel that the passenger or passengers ought to pay the entire gas bill, but half is fine. Anyway, it depends on the relationship and the situation with different people. I don't think there's really a definite answer.

But for the driver to offer, then charge for gas, is wrong. They're going anyway, it's just nervy for them to ask someone else to pay for it. If Cloak had asked the person to go out of their way, then the driver is right to ask for money. But the driver's going there whether Cloak is in the car or not, so they should anticipate Cloak offering some compensation rather than ask for it. Clear as mud? Thought so, but that's the best I can do.

a bus a ship etc are going that way to make money..thats why u pay.... it is hardly the same situation. i say those that expect to be paid are not as "christian minded" as they would like to think they are.. as a christian minded person u should offer to help out in some way. fifty percent is a personal decision on ur need of a ride.. it is an insult coming from the driver

Thanks all for your precious feedback and input! The way I see it is...As Christians we're supposed to go the extra mile. For instance a passenger who is being offered a ride can pay for dinner at that place divided between him and the other passenger for the owner of the car as a favour and gratitude or have compensated that driver in some other way. As Christians we are requested to be givers and generous. The others can always compensate in some other way...Xmas gift, dinner invitation. Expecting others to pay for gas and making $$$ out of going to a Christian conference with a driver who is going there anyway makes it look like profit and business deal and that does not make us any different from the rest of the world since this is the standard of the world.

This reminds me of the hilarious episode of I Love Lucy where Ricky and Lucy were going to drive from New York to California. Fred and Ethel Mertz wanted to go to California too, so the Ricardos invited them. Ethel volunteered that she and Fred would pay for half the car expenses. Fred quickly pulled her aside and said: "Why should we pay anything, the back seat is going anyway."

If you completed reading my post...you will see clearly that I said the passengers can always reciprocate to the driver. If our behaviour is the same as the world, then how can we make a difference in people life, as "Christians"?

ORIGINAL: Memaw. This is the way I see it. The bus/aircraft/ship/whatever is also going the same place I want to go, so why isn't it free as well? My take: The purpose of car pooling is to save all of the pooler's some money. I don't know the car owner's circumstances, but perhaps she needs the money. Maybe she couldn't have made the trip without some help with the gas. A six hour trip could cost as much as $70.00 in gas. Gasoline costs as much as twenty cents per mile. It also costs at least that much to operate the car (maintenance, wear and tear, etc.). My Christian view is that if the person using their car to transport me asks me to share the gas expense, I shouldn't second guess their motives and should chip in. I am with Kerr on this. We don't know that the car would have been able to go the same way had she not had the gas paid for. You may think her rude for asking, but I also think it is rude not to offer. If the offer had been made she wouldn't have had to ask. Is the complaint that she was not Christian like to give you a free ride to the conference? She did not actually make money off from this... she wasn't going home with a wad of money to count. It all went to the gas. As for the person that drove, well that is between them and her. That is not your problem. I remember how wonderfully grateful I was to receive a box of really nice clothes from a friend. We had a mutual friend that told me that the people that gave me the clothes gave me something of worth and that I should at the very least give the gal $20 for the clothes. I was heartbroken because I thought I must seemed ungrateful or greedy because we didn't have even $20 to give. It took me a bit to realize that it was not my mutual friend's business. If the gal wanted payment, she would have asked. Whether or not you think that the other guy should have not paid is not your business. Maybe it was worth it to him to help the lady get to the conference. It probably would have been worth it to me even if wasn't "fair" per se. It was actually a good deal since the gas was halved.

The Bible says that WE are to go the extra mile, not expect everyone else to go the extra mile for you. IOW, If you really want to pull the extra mile card, then do so... go the extra mile and pay for all the gas instead of just griping about the deal you got (or at least giver a break for not being perfect in your eyes). I don't think that I would be acting Christ like to complain when given a ride where I don't have to drive and only have to pay for half of the gas.

You do that. Just don't criticise when there are other's of us who don't hold the same convictions. We aren't stingy or selfish...just practical.

ORIGINAL: Cloak I stand and uphold by what I believe! Well, based on this thread, it looks like you are saying that you believe that everyone else should be Christlike so that you can get a free ride. When you can't get something for nothing, you seem to believe that it is Christlike to go online and complain how some one else didn't go the extra mile for you and no one should expect you to go the extra mile for them. It looks like your are not really concerned with our testimony to the outside world when the outside world knew nothing of this until you posted on the world wide web. It looks like you believe in the old "Do as I say and not as I do" bit. I have a hard time believing that such a outstanding Christian that is so concerned with Christian testimony would believe and uphold what your posts seem to be saying, but that is the way that your posts look.

I don't think that I would be acting Christ like to complain when given a ride where I don't have to drive and only have to pay for half of the gas. I agree with this post entirely. Also as far as reciprocating in another way? Well if you are willing to pay for a dinner why not give the money for gas instead? It doesn't need to be so complicated. Perhaps the driver invited you to save you money, but to save themselves money as well. Perhaps they need the money or will not be able to afford to go. Either way everyone involved saves some money and still makes the trip. What's the big deal? And even if I agreed with Cloak on the issue of not paying if the driver is going there anyway, there is no reason to call the driver un-Christlike. That is ridiculous. Being a Christian does not mean you are perfect in everything you do, and it would do some people well to remember that before they go off in harsh judgement of others.

Maybe it's a cultural thing, but I would never expect someone to give me a three hour ride and not expect to at least compensate them for part of the expense of doing so.
