Purple Rose of Cairo, Bananas, Sleeper, Manhattan I liked. The rest I can give or take. If you really want to hear him at his best, get ahold of a CD called "Woody Allen; The Night Club Years". It's only available on the net. It's absolutely hilarious stand up from the 60s.

Yeah, but is it Hannah and Her Sisters where he thinks he has the brain tumor because his ear hurts? That kills me! I'll check out that video. Allen is the one who said that "comedy is tragedy and timing." I think he's right.

Woody Allen is a rat morally, and I was sadly disappointed with his escapades with the woman he is now married to, I have to say their really aren't many filmakers who ar willing to consider the questions he asks. He has fallen into a bit of a rut lately, but I really thought at the mid-point of his career, Stardust Memories, Hannah and Her Sisters, Crimes and Misdemeanors were among the most thoughtful explorations of morality and meaning I have ever seen on screen. The last movie I have seen of his that I really enjoyed was Bullets Over Broadway; it seems like a lot of his later efforts just lack heart.

I think that's a very good summation. (So many entertainers are morally rat-like that I pretty much ignore anything they do outside of their work. Or I try to.)

I'm usually disappointed by Woody Allen. I did like Sleepers, but mostly when it was over-the-top. Radio Days was dull and Annie Hall so neurotic that I spent most of the time looking at her clothes and ignoring the characters. Maybe I'll find one I like some day.

Well, interesting to note that since Allen is now around his early 70's, it seems the comedic genius behind Sleepers and Bullets Over Broadway is feeling a lot more neurotic, now that his indulgence in dark humor is starting to look... well, dark and full of melancholy, now that the bloke (or shall I say schmuck) who married his own stepdaughter (perhaps to fulfill his post-middle age, "What's-Up-Tiger-Lilly?" fantasies) is feeling death is knocking at his door at an even more frequent rate--especially after (Woody Allen) saying that not only is there no God, but no plumbers on a Sunday; I'm guessing Allen will have to reconsider his options as of late...

The only films he's done in the past 10 years that are worth seeing are "Matchpoint" and "Vicky Christina Barcelona" (I'd put Matchpoint along side his best, in fact). Everything else is either awful (most of his comedies), or a good idea with mediocre execution (the 1/2 comedy, 1/2 drama one was OK, but not great. I can't remember its name). But before "Matchpoint" you'd have to go all the way back to "Sweet and Lowdown" to find a film he did that was worth seeing (and "Sweet and Lowdown," was just OK, not great). But that said, he has more classics or near classics under his belt than any other living director right now: Sleeper, Manhattan, Shadows and Fog, Annie Hall, Hannah and Her Sisters, Crimes and Misdemeanors, Bullets over Broadway, Interiors, etc, etc, etc. He also had a longer run in terms of quality/quantity than most other directors, as from about 1975 to 1995 he released almost a film a year and most of them were great. I usually still see most everything he releases, even if I know it probably won't be good, just because I like him as a director. My favorite comedy of his has always been "Love and Death." It's a screwball parody of Russian novels, existentialist philosophy, and Ingmar Bergman films -and it's probably the only time that I have EVER laughed at slapstick (some of the slapstick in it is genius).

I have to admit I thought Matchpoint was barely more than a remake of Crimes and Misdemeanors, and not as enjoyable.
