I'm looking for bible passages or specific chapters that encourage you to be a good person - no dead rising from the graves, no stoning children, no threat of everlasting torment, just great passages about being good to other people. Thanks for your time.

Okay, Dereck, now I see you duplicated your OP in Science&Origins. I suspect that one will be closed shortly. So let me restate my post here:

One can never go wrong with Galatians 5:22-23 - But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

'As it is written, There is none righteous(good in themselves)no, not one.'(Romans 3:10 )

'For through one man's(Adam's)disobedience all inherit his nature but through obedience of the One Man all are made righteous [for] 20 the Law came to make a sharp distinction where judgment lies but where judgment increased grace abounded even further even to the point of grace manifest through righteousness in eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.'(Romans 5:19,20)

Tit for tat.

There are so many but I have to say the prayer that Jesus prayed for all who would believe in Him, after His victory in the Garden of Gethsemane. It is John chapter 17. It brings tears to my eyes

(1Co 10:13) No temptation has taken you but what is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but with the temptation also will make a way to escape, so that you may be able to bear it.

This promise shows that through faith in the Word and by the guidance of the Holy Spirit that a Believer can live the sanctified life they are clalled to live.

Thanks
RC

Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which i
s good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:
And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.

Ephesians 4: 29-32

The Shema, which is a mix of mainly Scripture with a little of other prayer:

quote:

Hear, Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is One. (Prayed in an undertone, because it is not Scripture: Blessed be the Name. His glorious kingdom is for ever and ever.) And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.

And these words that I command you today shall be in your heart. And you shall teach them diligently to your children, and you shall speak of them when you sit at home, and when you walk along the way, and when you lie down and when you rise up. And you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be for frontlets between your eyes. And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

And it shall come to pass if you surely listen to the commandments that I command you today to love the Lord your God and to serve him with all your heart and all your soul, That I will give rain to your land, the early and the late rains, that you may gather in your grain, your wine and your oil. And I will give grass in your fields for your cattle and you will eat and you will be satisfied.

Beware, lest your heart be deceived and you turn and serve other gods and worship them. Then anger of the Lord will blaze against you, and he will close the heavens and there will not be rain, and the earth will not give you its produce, and you will perish quickly from the good land that the Lord gives you.

So you shall put these, my words, on your heart and on your soul; and you shall bind them for signs on your hands, and they shall be for frontlets between your eyes. And you shall teach them to your children, and you shall speak of them when you sit at home, and when you walk along the way, and when you lie down and when you rise up. And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates in order to prolong your days and the days of your children on the land
that the Lord promised your fathers that he would give them, as long as the days that the heavens are over the earth.

And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, Speak to the children of Israel and say to them they should make themselves tzitzit (fringes) on the corners of their clothing throughout their generations, and give the tzitzit of each corner a thread of blue. And they shall be tzitzit for you, and when you look at them you will remember all of the Lord's commandments and do them and not follow after your heart and after your eyes which lead you astray, in order to remember and do all My commandments, and be holy for your God.

I am the Lord, your God who lead you from the land of Egypt to be a God to you. I am the Lord, your God.

When I was converting from agnosticism to Christianity, these verses from Colossians 1 really grabbed me, and made a lasting impression on me

15 Christ is the visible image of the invisible God.
He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation,[e]
16 for through him God created everything
in the heavenly realms and on earth.
He made the things we can see
and the things we can’t see—
such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world.
Everything was created through him and for him.
17 He existed before anything else,
and he holds all creation together.
18 Christ is also the head of the church,
which is his body.
He is the beginning,
supreme over all who rise from the dead.[f]
So he is first in everything.
19 For God in all his fullness
was pleased to live in Christ,
20 and through him God reconciled
everything to himself.
He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth
by means of Christ’s blood on the cross.
21 This includes you who were once far away from God. You were his enemies, separated from him by your evil thoughts and actions. 22 Yet now he has reconciled you to himself through the death of Christ in his physical body. As a result, he has brought you into his own presence, and you are holy and blameless as you stand before him without a single fault.

23 But you must continue to believe this truth and stand firmly in it. Don’t drift away from the assurance you received when you heard the Good News. The Good News has been preached all over the world, and I, Paul, have been appointed as God’s servant to proclaim it.

Hello,
Galatians 5!...remember you have to take the good with the bad, so you will know the circumstances when good is not accomplished. The Bible is structured on the principles of LIFE and DEATH. Blessings

...Jesus said to his host, "When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. 13But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, 14and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous." (Luke 14:12-14)

This to me is the epitome of what it means to be like Jesus in this world--letting the abundance of Christ within us overflow to the weak and vulnerable around us without regard for payback in this life, but setting our hope fully on the payback we will receive at the resurrection. What a joy and a pleasure it is to be a source of provision and comfort to the helpless in this life. This is what it means to store treasure up in heaven for ourselves from a sincere faith. These verses always move me. Christ's promise to us stirs in me a faith and courage that we need not fear loss at being kind and open-handed to the underpriveleged among us. It won't be forgotten.

I re-read John chapter 13 for a disciplining meeting. Since then, I have been convicted to love others more as a servant as Jesus demonstrated to the disciples when he washed their feet. I even did the laundry Thursday night so my wife could rest.

I re-read John chapter 13 for a disciplining meeting. Since then, I have been convicted to love others more as a servant as Jesus demonstrated to the disciples when he washed their feet. I even did the laundry Thursday night so my wife could rest.

My heart soars when I see others learning what it means to walk in the life that Christ has given us. This is the very way that Christ said we will experience the joy that was his, and which he wants to give to us.

"8This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.
9"As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love. 11I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. 12My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. (John 14:8-12)

You are truly priveleged that you have eyes that see and a mind that understands. Few find this narrow but blessed way. Thank you for sharing.

Covaan _ Meshuga beet me to it. I think the Shema is the most important Scripture, because in it we see how we are to interact with Adonai, our family, our community, the world and His Word.

#1 define the word good b/c depending on how you define good will determine what passage i would give you

here is one though try reading the book of Jude ... why b/c the book of Jude (and it is a short one) is about the acts of the apostates and Jude exhorts the believers not to be over come by false doctrine and to not lose hope

also a proper understanding of hell i think puts the nessisary fear into a person to do the right thing Revelation 20 for example
