beyond the effects of socialization would you believe the way you currently do and if so how, remember your answer can not be an effect of socialization.

Most of my socialization was contrary to what I believe now (at least, before I became a Christian). I think it is one hallmark of Christianity that it's believers are often converted contrary to their previous socilization (starting with Paul I believe).

This question could only be asked in America, where religious freedom is still mostly intact. I'm touched reading stories by "Voice of the Martyrs" of Christians in China, India, or Iran who risk (and sometimes lose) everything for believing in Jesus. Talk about contrary to socialization!

Well if socialization means (and I am about to totally make-up a definition), 'the effect that those whom one socializes with on one's thinking and actions', then presumably if one's friends or family were believers, and were influencing one to believe in Christ as well, then that might be considered a role of socialization on one becoming a Christian.

Okay, that's fair to say. However, is there a difference between being influenced by Christians and actually becoming a Christian? How does the opposite scenario play out? That is, can a Christian be influenced by socialization of agno-atheists to become an unbeliever?

I have to add something here, I know we have all heard the fabled stories of the infamous "Preachers Daughter". Think about that. Now compare that to the santanist high priests who leave the satanic church to have a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

I'm sorry, jmjphe, but I really don't see how a satanic high priest would ever be in a position to be influenced by socialization with Christians! Please explain.

Okay, I see what you're saying now. I guess I misread the "comparison" thing.

For me, it was really simple, and societal factors didn't really play a part. I read the bibble (KJV) when I was quite young and it was readily apparent that it didn't stack up with reality, even at that age.

All societies have a concept of god. In my youth, I went to church and read parts of the bible. I can’t say I read all of it until after my actual conversion. My early societal influences led to my disillusionment with religion and eventually atheism (which to me was a religion of sorts). It wasn’t until challenged by a neighbor in college to investigate some of those ideas that I considered absurd (history and archeology) that I came to realize that the bible is likely true and Jesus was a real entity. I also had an issue with creation. But when reading Genesis with an open mind, I realized that the order of creation was very similar to the geological and fossil record (I don’t believe in a 144-hour creation). I then had to ask myself, “what if this is all true?” At that time, and probably now, it was “cool” to be an atheist. All the “smart” people were atheists. Would I forsake my high-minded group of friends and join the group of “losers” who needed the crutch of “Jesus?” Absolutely! As Pascal argued, the benefits in believing in god are infinite. So in my case, I rejected societal pressures in college and received the truth of the Gospel.

I might get that impression too if I read a bibble (or a babble) instead of a bible. LOL!!!
