I am looking for easy sweet and savory appetizers to serve at an informal
Christmas evening get together. I would like for them to be finger friendly
if possible.
Also, what are your favorite holiday drinks?
I am open to all suggestions, please post plenty to choose from.

At the present I am leaning towards...
Baked Brie with apricot preserves and toasted pecans, served with crackers
Chocolate truffles

Hot Mulled Cider (maybe with rum, or maybe not)
Wassail (which I have never made, but I tasted some the other day....yummy!!!!)

Please post more ideas!

I usually just buy a big box of the mixed appetizers from the grocery store. You can get cheese puffs, crab puffs, pigs in a blanket, pizza bagels, mini pizzas, or egg rolls.

I usually serve Italian antipasto. Put toothpicks out for taking what you want.

Ham or salami in bite size pieces. All of this should be bite size.
two or three types of cheese.
olives, pitted. (black olives and also a few types of Italian olives)
artichoke hearts.
tomato bites.
Peppers, in various pretty colors.
Chick peas
mushrooms and any other veggies you like.
Fresh basil ( adds a pretty green color and tasty with the tomatoes.)

You can stir this together like a salad but it is also very pretty in rows like a rainbow of colors.

Crab Dip

1 lb. imitation crab, chopped
8 oz. cream cheese, softened
2 Tbsp. sour cream
1 Tbsp. lemon juice
2 green onions, chopped

Parsley for garnish

Mix everything together except for parsley. Put on serving platter, garnish with parsley, serve with crackers, celery sticks, or crusty bread.

Cheese Balls (a.k.a. Baked Olives)

Make a dough out of 1 stick butter or margarine (softened), 1 cup flour, and 1 jar Old English cheese spread. Add a dash of cayenne if you wish. Wrap a small portion of dough around individual pimento-stuffed green olives. Freeze for a couple of hours or overnight. Bake at 400 for 10 minutes or until slightly puffy and golden brown. Makes 35-40.

Yes, these are ideas that I was looking for...the baked olives have really peaked my curiosity.
I love meatballs also. I like making that sauce from jelly and mustard.
Hubby won't eat crab meat...reckon I could use shrimp in the dip?

Thank you all for your time...please keep ideas flowing!

Imitation crab is really just white fish. All you have to do is change the name. Call it Seafood Delight Dip.

My Dad thinks he doesn't like cream cheese. My sister in law makes all these wonderful cakes and if "cream cheese" is in the title, she just changes the name. My Dad eats it never knowing.

Something that hubby makes for every single family get together we have (I think I would have to divorce him if he ever skipped it ) is bacon-wrapped deer kabobs. Of course most people don't have a freezer full of deer, so you can just use beef steak.

Take thinly sliceds pieces of steak and marinate them in Italian dressing, or your favorite meat marinade. Lay out a half slice of bacon, then lay on top one piece of the marinated meat with a half mushroom, chunk of onion, chunk of pepper (we use anaheims, but bell peppers will work) then wrap the bacon around it all and secure with a toothpick. We do ours on the grill, but you could also do them on a raised rack on a cookie sheet in the oven. Just cook them until the bacon is done, everything else will be done by then too. YUM.

(They reheat well in the oven wrapped in foil.)

easiest thing ever?
a round plate on which I put a ring of Ritz crackers, then inside that ring I do pepperoni, then inside that ring I do 2 cheeses. Everyone loves it, and it's so incredibly easy, and almost everyone picks some of it up to nibble.

We also do:
a soft garlic/cheese spread in the center of a plate, topped with sundried tomato basil pesto, rimmed with crackers.

meatballs in barbecue sauce (with toothpicks on the side)

queso (we make our own) and tortilla chips

pizza bites (from the freezer section)

Oh goodness.. there are so many that my brain is swimming, and I'll have to think about what all we do.

Sam's club. They have everything and it comes out cheaper if you buy them pre-made then if you have to buy all of the ingredients, put them together, wash all the dishes, and the electricity to bake them.

Artichoke Dip

1 can artichoke hearts (chopped)
1 cup mayonaisse (can be reduced fat)
1 cup parmeasan cheese
1 tbsp wistershire sauce
1 tbsp garlic powder

mix all ingredients in a oven safe dish, bake until bubbly and serve with crackers/bread. I have to double this everytime I make it.

Veggie Pizza

This can be made early in the day and kept in the refrigerator

1 can crescent rolls
1 pkg cream cheese softened
1 tbsp dill
1 tbsp garlic powder
2 2.5 cups assorted chopped veggies

I use cucumber (seeds removed), red or yellow bell pepper for color, broccoli, and grape tomatoes (sliced)

roll out crescent rolls onto loaf pan to form a crust and bake according to package and cool.

Mix cream cheese, dill and garlic powder. Spread on cooled crust.

Chop veggies of choice and spread over cream cheese mixture. I use the tomatoes as a garnish.

You can also experiment with different flavors in the cream cheese if you do not like dill.

These are a few things I always do that go over well.

Cream Cheese Spinach Roll-ups. Mix cream cheese with frozen thawed spinach, well drained, and spread on fresh tortillas(the thicker ones work best). Add sliced black olives and roll the tortillas up tightly, then slice into one-inch slices. I stick colored toothpicks in them to keep them rolled and add some festive colors.

Taquitos with fresh guacamole and salsa. They reheat very well, so they can be made ahead of time. If I do them homemade, I roll shredded chicken breast into corn tortilla and deep fry. I drain them very well on paper towels then pop them back into the micro to heat well just before placing on the table. I've used some of the frozen ones and they are really good, so I'm going to cheat this year! I place them in a circular design around the platter with one bowl of guacamole and one bowl of salsa in the center.

I also usually do a homemade cheese ball(I can't locate the recipe for that right now) and surround it with 2-3 kinds of crackers and cut up veggies.

For drinks, I don't serve anything alcoholic, so I usually have coffee, hot cider on the stove, and soft drinks for those who don't care for hot drinks.

This is very easy, yet people will think you fussed and they will gobble these appetizers up:

Shrimp Crackers

1 pkg good sized crackers like Triscuit or Big Wheat Thins
1 bag frozen salad shrimp (the little kind) shelled and tails off, thawed
1 tub cream cheese (the soft spreadable kind)
1 bottle cocktail sauce (also called seafood sauce)

Take a cracker and spread some cream cheese on it. Put some cocktail sauce on top of the cream cheese. Take several of the shrimp (depending on how big they are) and arrange them on top of the cocktail sauce. Repeat until you have as many as you want or you run out of an ingredient.

Gina, how do you make your queso?

Well, you can buy either the actual mexican-type cheese (sorry, David knows what it's called, but I don't) or you can use velveeta. Then we add Rotel which is a tomato/green chili pepper mix, then I normally add some milk or cream to get it to the consistency that I like. (I like it so that it covers a chip but doesn't congeal quickly)

Then you have to sort of keep it warm (crock pot or something similar) so that it won't become "hard" again. =) It's yummy!! =)
