Doink, thank you sooo much for bringing that wonderful piece to my attention. I forwarded it to most of my family and friends.

Just wanted to share this with you guys...we have been reading this message before every Thanksgiving dinner for several years now and it has been a blessing.

Rekindling the Gratitude by John MacArthur

But there is nothing in there about having a better marriage, disciplining children, fighting for our Christian heritage, or anything else Christians are supposed to talk about. Why, not even a date for the rapture! Are you sure John MacArthur is Christian?

BTW -- The last time we went around the table saying what we were thankful for, I said I was thankful for having a job. The next day I was laid off. (Yes, the Friday after Thanksgiving!) We don't do that anymore.

wow...that can't have been good at all.

Here's another one that sorta kicked me in the gut with all my whining this year.

Gratitude is a reaction to grace, something we do NOT deserve.

It is not as important for us to FEEL thankful as it is for us to GIVE thanks. That's why we have Thanksgiving, not Thanksfeeling.

Excellent post! I believe the failure to understand that biblical principle is the root of all kinds of bad theology.

If a pastor needs to admonish his congregation to have an 'attitude of gratitude', he is just laying down another law. We will have an attitude of gratitude when we see what God has willingly done on our behalf, not when we are told to do this, feel that, eat this and wear that.

Doug, I don't totally agree. I think a pastor that admonishes his congregation to have an attitude of gratitude is giving good biblical counsel. Obedience supersedes emotions, but attitude is a reflection of the heart. Even Paul admonished his readers to have such an attitude:

In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
-1 Thessalonians 5:18

And the familiar 1 Timothy 2:1:
I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men...

It may be good Biblical counsel, but it is still the law. Anytime we must do something, it is the law. Good Biblical counseling often includes the law, but it must also point to what God has done to keep that law, i.e. grace.

Anything that we must do to be RIGHTEOUS is the Law. To do NOTHING is a theology of the sluggard.

I did not capitalize the word 'law'. That was intentional.

Hi John And Welcome!

There are many CCC's around, but it looks like we don't use our Cards very often in this thread. Don't know why.

Well, I think I do know why, but I'm a scaredy cat.
