Thanks Ray, and APZR and Denny,

Ray, y'al probably have those fancy cell phones with the CB feature?
There's been no report on the deck around the house... I guess a masterful job has held up great? Things like that...it's helpful to have a hammer around to tap nails back in.

No. We haven't had any CB for decades either.

Actually, I guess we do. We've got a cheapo set of walkie-talkies that we use when backing up the trailer. She makes sure that I don't hit anything.

Where I live isn't very far from Detroit. The economy around here is dire. The car companies have been offering buyouts for years, and more recently there have been massive layoffs. The steel plants are laying off too. Just recently it has been in the news that a cement plant is closing. A friend of mine works there.

Fortunately, my job is very secure and recession proof. Thank God.

Gotta keep this here fire burnin'. Mr. Den. You seem to put great stock in "consumer reports". Well "I DUNT" as Ricky Ricardo said back in the 50's. It's a bunch of the back end of a horse--won't git specific.
"If you don't own Mopar--you don't have no-car."
Because unreliability is an all- encompassing car word--they will fault Chrysler on poor instrumentation, a mile or two less on gas, or some other stupid thing--but the "rice burners" and other cars have at least as many faults--ONLY more expensive to fix probably. Example: The old honda civic--so low roofline a North American baby had to bend over to get in(slight exaggeration). FORD: "fix or repair daily"--remember the old rust buckets? Try buying a starter, alternator, gas tank, etc. for a Nissan, Mazda, VW, Mercedes, Lexus, etc. You'll be bringing a suitcase full of $ to pay for it-- just like the tv. commercial for the guy filling the gas tank of his oversized Honda?? Ford, GM, truck??
Price out a starter for a domestic car--mutch cheaper.
Anyway gotta go.

Anything you want to. The conversation is very fluid.

Being a part of the convos sounds like a prison term.

Ray, the current economy makes me soooo darn glad my wife is a highly skilled learning disabilities teacher, and is in very high demand for her field of specialty. My business can be gone tomorrow with the passage of bad legislation, increased taxes, or an economy going into stagflation like the old Jimmy Carter dazes. However, I can go back to where I started... painting, handy man, and cleaning houses for upper income clients. Since I enjoy physical work and working with my hands, it's not a degrading job to me... I'll do what I gotta do.

Mopar is good... the new German owned Krystler is nutting but junk. Sad, but we don't really have an "American" cars left. Much of Chevy is assembled in Mexico, Ford is in bed with Japan and Mazda, Chrysler is now Daimler (German) owned, etc... In this global economy, to be strictly brand loyal is as crazy as closing an ear to any teaching other than your own denomination. I buy what every I can get the best deal on when I need a new truck. Brand does not matter as they all now can easily archive well over 120,000 miles. So I guess I'm a Ford, Honda, Chevy, Dodge, Toyota man... have owned all them at one time or another in the past.

OH! WE "dunt" no nuthin' up hear in ole heathen Canada.
Hope u aren't like the truck drivers up here. They buy a Ford Titan 6000 pounder to drive 1 person around all day--they stop at Tim Horton's(Starbucks) for a coffee & put it in the EMPTY rear cargo box and say " I'm a man--I got a truck--no liner needed--no scratches from a coffee cup!!! I'm gone--have a good sleep.

Welcome Ninja!

Perhaps he was referring to the similarity between the terms 'convo' and 'convict'.

Yeah, just jump in. We really don't have a topic...just some guys hangin' out in the garage and shooting the bull.

Not anymore. Daimler had their way with Chrysler...raped them and took all their money. Then they sent them on their way.

I was diagnosed with severe dyslexia in the fourth grade. That was about 1970. The teachers were excited to find a real case of something they'd recently learned about its existance. Through grades four through eight, I went to a lot of special classes. Those specialized teachers were the best ones I've ever had.

I'm with ya' then. Except, my mother had to teach the teachers about Dizzilexia, and fight to find services to help me learn. Some understood it, others insisted that I was just flat lazy. If the ignorant teachers pushed too many of my buttons, I'd just start to mirror write to teach them a lesson my way... writing that way was easier for me anyway!

BTW, who owns Chrysler now? Are they like many of the banks now daze with 52% Gobment ownership?

I used to fascinate my friends by being able to read well upside-down. It wasn't much more difficult.

Chrysler is back to being their own entity, but they're looking for a buyer. Talks with Ford went for a while and I think they came to the conclusion that it just wasn't feasable. Talks with GM went quite well and GM was ready to green-light when they couldn't secure enough credit to make the deal.

Good thing GM didn't buy them out... they have been struggling for 10 years now, and the UAW would have eaten them a live with 2 major union shops. I honestly don't know how the auto manufactures will make it out of this mess, they'll be forced to go over seas where the unions can't financially bankrupt them. The gobment, unions, and other mandated cost on business is why I haven't grown my business or hired anyone else who isn't working as a sub-contractor. Just can't make it profitable with "employees".

Ah, cars. I'm still waiting to get my first one. I know the auto business is suffering terribly. I would like to see just how things go over time with all these bailouts.

If he's still living with his parents, then he'll be like I was... want what the heck ever they bought for me to drive.
My first car was a '69 Chevy Malibu coupe. Not a super sport, but was still fun to drive. My uncle gave it to us when his mother died, and I was thrilled. Was heavy on the oil though... you'd stop to fill up the oil and check the gas level.

Well, never really stayed in one place long enough to save up money and buy one. I haven't been that fortunate with resources and family background. But, given the transition I am in right now I am planning for my first by the end of the summer next year. I know the car I want, but my first one is going to be mostly someone's hand-me-down fixed up for a good price, just to get me around. I'd like an SUV or an Escalade; I like cadellacs alot and Blazers as well. Fun stuff!!!

Yeah fun stuff until gas goes back up to $4.00 again. Will you be able to afford to have a vehicle that gets really bad gas milage? That's something to consider anyway.

My first car was a 1964 Chevy Imapla 4-door. 230 CID straight six with a three-speed manual on-the-column gearshift. It never used any oil at all, but the gas milage was only about 16mpg. Today those 64's are really big with the low-rider crowd.

My dad sold it to me. It was not a gift. My brother and I both had to buy our cars. My little sister of course had one given to her.

At this point as long as it has a nice engine, working heat, and a working radio then I'll take it....and it must be dirt cheap at this point. The plan is to buy a car once I make my transition to Kansas in June so that way I can start off by having a car with my life there. So, I'm going to see how that goes when the time comes.

Howdy, y'all.

I'm Jeff. I hope y'all don't mind a country boy droppin' in all unannounced and such. I just happened to wander in from Iraq and thought a garage was a much better place to hang my hat for a bit.

My Marines and I have been dealin' with a bunch of terrorist nonsense these days. We're kinda gettin' to wonder how the other half of the world is doin'. Really ain't much goin' on when you're stuck in the sandbox, but some garage chat sure sounds invitin'. Mind if I have a cup of that brew y'got a-brewin'?
