Gotta get my eyes checked, gotta stab my finger twice a day, gotta cut out all the good stuff like cupcakes and cookies and (steady now) chocolate. And he wants to see me again in two weeks. But, much as I want to meet Jesus, I ain't quite ready to go with the alternative yet. Now I gotta get back to work.

Bill, I know a lot of diabetics, some in my family. In order to not go crazy, they allow themselves a little bit of this, a little bit of that. And it satisfies them. Of course, I'm sure not everyone can do that. It takes strength. I imagine going cold turkey off what you (I) like would make you (me) think about almost nothing else!

Sorry to hear it Bill, but I guess you did know it was likely. I hope you can reintroduce some sweets after you get it regulated. I know there are quite a few books with diabetic desserts and stuff, it probably won't be all that hard to do, just different.

Good Afternoon Everyone! Sharon-Marie, very sorry to hear about the seizure, but that was very cool about Brent staying on the line the whole time while you were having the episode. Pam, sorry to hear about your situation as well. Bill, that rots, I have Type II myself. There is a support thread in health for those dealing with diabetes. quote:

ORIGINAL: stamper_ben No cupcakes! Aw man.... Sums it very nicely. Actually, it's not that I can't eat stuff, I just have to (pardon my language) portion it. That bag of Kisses that goes in two or three days has to last a month now. quote:
Did they give you a new eating plan to follow? Not yet, but I've already got a couple of cookbooks, a book called "What Do I Eat Now?", and have found a web site that lists the carbs in pretty much everything. And if my insurance will pay for it, I want to sit down with a nutritionist and get their input. Pam, that "little bit" approach is what's going to be hardest. Like I said, portion is a bad word in my dictionary. And how are you doing? quote:
There is a support thread in health for those dealing with diabetes. I know, I've been wading through the 7 months worth of posts. Lots of good info in there. quote:
Is the dr going to send you to a diabetic workshop where they teach you how to eat, how to test, etc? If you have insurance it should cover it. They showed me how to test right there and sent me home with a meter. Eating is easy, too; if it's in my cupboards I shouldn't be eating it. Thank you all for your prayers and support. Without them I'd probably be a basket case. But God is good, and I'm already seeing the blessings in this (like eating healthier). I may not be rejoicing like James said to in his epistle, but I ain't cryin' neither!

Bill, I know you are going to be alright. I was wondering...what about sugarfree chocolate and stuff like that, would that be ok for you. You, know as much as fake sugar can be ok. There is a shop at the mall that has all kinds of sugarfree chocolate and candy, it really isn't that bad. (I can't believe I just said that. )

You can have agave nectar, right? A natural sweetener that doesn't affect your blood sugar? You could have cacao nibs (chopped raw cocoa beans---I love them---and the list of nutrients is three pages long!) with agave nectar. My son likes to mix that with sliced strawberries. Sometimes I mix cacao nibs and honey (you would be safer with the agave nectar---but even then, ask the dr. first) and natural peanut butter. Mmmm! Really satisfies the chocolate craving.

Just a friendly reminder though. Don't have a lot of artificial sweetners. They'll go straight through you.

.what about sugarfree chocolate and stuff like that, It's not just sugar, it's carbs. And I love me some carbs. I can eat lots of stuff, but have to be conscious of how many grams of carbohydrates I eat, and what kind. My stepmother made it simple, nothing white. No white flour, bread, sugar, potatoes, or rice. They hit the blood stream in a rush that spikes your blood sugar. Whole grains and leafy green veggies are good. Fresh fruit is okay in small portions (I hate that word!) early in the day when I can work off the sugars. And, here's something I just read today, sugar free stuff sometimes has a higher carb count than the full blown sugar variety. Agave nectar? Never heard of it. I'll have to add that to my research list. I'm giving myself a crash course in diabetes and how to care for myself. I'm not scared any more, I'm determined. This has gotten my Irish up, and I can be one stubborn Mick when I want to be.

Comforting Bible verse for me: II Corinthians 7-10 7To keep me from becoming conceited because of these surpassingly great revelations, there was given me a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. 8Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. 9But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. 10That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. And Romans 8:28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
