I just lost my mom, a month ago. She was not married to my father, but another man. All I want is to get photos, letters and such.... I wish mom had made out a will detailing items like this. I am having to play a serious legal game. Bah.

Any of you have to deal with stuff like that?

Yeap, it's gotta be done... no matter the age. If you have family, you need a will to make sure things happen as you want. Otherwise, you could end up a pine box and the state dishing out your stuff as they see fit. My parents, brother, and BIL know our plans and where our will stuff is located. In return, I've got copies of their wills and know their plans.

They do have wills and other documents like living wills and trusts and etc. One thing I noticed is that the documents were prepared in a different state than the one they are living in now.

When we had our own documents prepared, our lawyer drew some of them up for both Michigan and Ohio because we live close to Ohio and sometimes people go by ambulance to a hospital in the other state. So that may be something worth looking into if someone moves from one state to another.

Another thing that's important is to make sure these documents are kept in a fireproof container.

Sorry to hear about your mom. Both of my parents and both of my wife's parents are all still alive.

I saw the posts earlier about shoveling snow. Great exercise! I am with Weight Watchers these days (lost 25 lbs since Oct '09 - 110 to go) and found that shoveling was a great way to get my exercise in while getting something done. Plus I really like the immediate satisfaction of a job well done.

And the BAG PIPES--go for it!!! I love 'em with the added benefit of the annoyance factor. We use to have an international folk dance club in South Bend and one of the guys was a wonderful bag pipe player. It was great fun.

Just talk my wife into the bagpipes.
(good luck on that one)

Plus, with the guitar and trumpet and harmonica, I've already got too many instruments to practice. Maybe after I retire.

Shoveling snow can be good exercise...as long as you have good technique and don't overdo it. Between back injuries and heart attacks, the task certainly has the potential for mishap.

Sort of like talking my wife, Darla, into letting me have some percussion items. Our percussionist at church wants to teach me some things and Darla's pretty skeptical. Probably has something to do with all of the dancing around I do to the music that is perpetually in my head.

We've threatened to get a drum set for my two-year old grandson. But they'd probably end up at my house if we did.

Ha ha. I'm an old drummer..... Many many years of annoying every family member and neighbor within earshot. Get a set of Bongos to start off! They are usually around $50 or so.

Speaking of the islands, I've always wanted a steel drum. Love how they sound.

Ya' know, the idea of "getting even" by giving grandkids drums can back fire when an even bigger drum comes with them to stay for a week during NEXT Christmas.

I have to admit I like playing the "getting even" game. It is disruptive when the big drum does show up, but even then we get to send the cuties back home - and put the drum away. It is interesting how grandkids remember toys from visit to visit, even the grandkids from far away who get to rarely visit.

For our grandson's first birthday (He's two now) I bought him a toy xylopone. His mother vindictively made sure that it went to our house instead of theirs. The irony is that we've had so much fun playing with the xylaphone together.

YooHoo We are heading to Disney, we are heading to Disney. Booked our bi-annual trip this week, can't wait... good food, good fun, and some cute gal to message my back and feet after playing all day.
Since my BIL has been unemployed for over 2 years, and the cousins have soooo much fun playing together, I'm taking the whole family. The last time we went, his daughter cried because they didn't get to go. So this time we'll have 5 adults and 8 kids!!! Will be fun though. If you are there the first week of June, watch out for the noisy crowd being chased by a couple of pitiful looking Dads just waiting to find a beer station.

Are you staying at the on-site hotels? We did the last time we went. It was a package deal and it worked out great. The hotels were nice. Shuttles back and forth. You get into the park early. Very reasonable.

Like you, we went with a large group...us and Tooshy's sisters. We flew in. The one thing that I remember was that about 20 different people handled your luggage...and they all got tipped.

Oh yes, on site at a grand resort. That's the way to do it when you are staying for a week... their resort, their food package, their shuttles, etc. It's the best all inclusive vacation I've ever had, not one single worry. We're close enough that we're driving down. However, I'm flying back as I've got to get back to work after a week off and the girls want to hang around in FL and visit Grandpaw.

I remember when the place opened in 1971. My wife went there with her family in 1978 if I remember correctly. The first time that I went there was in 1981 when I was stationed in Orlando while in the Navy. We've been back a couple times since then, but not since the kids were in their teens. So that's been more than ten years ago...maybe closer to 15.

i went last june with a military organization i am base VP of. took 20 single soldiers and single parents. it was a blast. we stayed at Pop Century resort. it is wild resort. we did some rides and such forst afternoon, ate at house of blues that night, spent next day seeing disney, the sunday went to Universal Studios, then monday drove back.

awesome trip and they really love the military there. being 38 and still a huge huge Donald Duck nut , was awesome to have him take a pic with us and the military organization banner. pic even made disney's website for a few weeks. that was a great treat for me
