ORIGINAL: anne-girl The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of red and royal blue for my colour theme. Not that I've seen any baby stuff in colours remotely like that! LOL What sort of "stuff" would you be looking for in those colours? There was a fair bit around when I had my children - well, in the primary colours, which means there was some yellow in there too, but I was fine with that. If you like those colours, I'd say go for it, and enjoy the search. It's part of you to like those colours, to prefer strong colours over pastels, so I personally think it's a good idea to pursue it.

If you aren't sure you want a quilt or a bumper pad, then maybe just getting a bed skirt and sheets would be easier? Not much point in buying a crib set if you aren't going to use half of it... I have found that quilts hung on the wall make a nice decoration until toddler hood when they can use the quilt. THIS is a pretty nursery, although they use pale blue instead of royal blue. I'm not usually huge pale blue fan but it looks nice with the boldness of the red. Actually, the entire Project Nursery site is cool and they have a beta search feature so you can look for rooms with specific colors. quote:
Ryanne, I don't know what colours I want for the bedding etc either. I like colour too much to pick a theme! I'm willing to bet that's the same problem you're having. My other issue is how to incorporate all the decor DH wants us to put up... stuff I don't necessarily like but which he had in his nursery. IMO there's only so much Jesus-themed or angel-themed pieces you can put up before it starts to look cloying (esp when it's angels watching over children), but what can you do? It's sentimental stuff... and all of it would look funny surrounded by the bright, cheery colours I'd like to have. Color is exactly my problem! I think we are going to go with a bird sort of theme for decorations so now I need to pick some sort of color palate. My other issue is that we are renting so we can't paint, which makes it hard for me to really feel like everything is pulled together. I'm going to make both girls a like THIS or THIS. Can your DH pick two or three things that are the most sentimental to him and you can use those in the nursery?

I have used quilts on the wall for decoration in both my nurseries. I thought it worked out really well. When Hannah was born, I think we received 7 or 8 handmade quilts. They were beautiful but I really had nothing to do with them. So up on the wall they went. It saved on me buying more stuff.

Jen, I agree that maybe going for a color scheme and buying pieces might be better. That's the point I was at because I couldn't find bedding I liked. So I was going with green and brown and later happened across the bedding set we ended up with.

If there really is more than you'd be happy with, how about just having one area set aside for his things, and then putting a different selection up, say, every month, and keeping the rest stored away. I'm just wondering if that could be a kind of compromise: that you get your bright colours, and he gets to have some of his childhood stuff put up.

It's not that much--three wall-hangings of his own; it's just that he wants to put all the art we haven't yet hung in the baby's room, including some stuff I've been given that I'm not crazy about. Funny picture of a horse? Baby's room. Cheapo print of Jesus knocking on a door? Baby's room. His father's angel print, very obviously mounted on chipboard? Baby's room. It can probably all fit on one wall, but I'm the one that'll be spending time in there, and I'd rather not look at on any wall. I think DH thinks he's compromising plenty by agreeing that we don't have to hang his grandparent's huge gold resin harp/fruit/scroll of music monstrosity... while I think I've compromised plenty by allowing some jokey artwork from his parents in the upper hall. He realizes that just because he loved something when he was four, doesn't mean it isn't in poor taste, but there's the emotional aspect of it all. And the financial aspect. In DH's view, it's stupid to spend any money on wall art when we already have some... so I find it hard to tell him that I really don't like said wall art all that much and would rather pick something I like. *sigh* This doesn't bug me most of the time, but I have a feeling it will bug me more as time goes by. I have enough artistic sensibilities to realize that by putting stuff I dislike in baby's room, I'm encouraging the development of baby's taste in a direction away from my own.

OK, another compromise suggestion!! How about perhaps asking him to sort them into one or two "must haves" and the rest as "may have laters". Maybe even say that what you'd like is for the baby to have his/her own decor from the start, and then can choose any of these items for him/herself later. With the idea that your new baby will be his/her own person from the start, not overly influenced/overshadowed by things from the past (unless you think that's too harsh).

Two must haves each sounds fair to me, Jen. Well, I picked birds as a "theme" and picked up some vintage inspired "shabby chic" type of fabrics at Joann's today so I can get started on the quilts. THIS is one of the sets of fabric and THIS is the other. I love their soft, feminine feel. I also put a wanted ad on Craigslist for a portable wooden crib and someone answered my ad, so I'm going to pick it up on Friday. Now I really feel like everything is coming together :) Oh, and I won a lot of embroidery hoops on Ebay that I'm going to use to hang fabric on the wall, like in THIS picture.

I love those fabrics. I'm debating trying the hoop thing too! It would be a way to use up some of my mad crazy huge fabric stash, and it wouldn't require any actual sewing. And because it's on the wall the fabric wouldn't have to be cotton. Hmmm. Did I mention my mother wants to get me a sewing machine to replace my cheapo one? She's such a sweetie! I desperately want to take her up on it but haven't got any time to research what I want. *sigh* I'm also scared I'd mess up a new one the same as I messed up this one; I always seem to mess up the timing on any machine I touch and I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. ETA: there's a couple of good posts at Ohdeeoh about repurposing a bumper, if you have one but don't want to use it: here and here. Disclaimer: if you haven't stumbled across this blog yet it's hugely addictive, if very stuff-oriented.

I saw a pic today of a bumper repurposed as a valance - they pulled the stuffing out and cut it down. Not a sewing person so I can't really see doing it myself but it is an idea. We bought a crib set that included a heavy quilt and a very firm bumper. I used the bumper (and will again) in the crib and I put the quilt on the glider rocker. The one I liked only came in an off white fabric, which was ok but kind of blah so putting the quilt on it worked out nicely for us. I know several people who have hung the quilts on the walls too.I'm not sure I've seen a crib set that comes with a blanket I'd feel comfortable using on an infant, supposedly they were moving to fleece blankets but I've yet to see it. Though for a newborn or young infant I would much rather stick to swaddling or sleep sacks anyway. Kris

Oooog. Suffering from sticker shock today. We did the rounds at some baby shops for the first time; I was all set to look at stuff on my shortlist but forgot that DH hadn't done any research and would be totally overwhelmed. Serves me right for only adding on 20% when reading average prices in Baby Bargains... more like 50% for some things. Would you believe a Snap N Go for $100? Good gravy! And don't get me started on stroller prices... although at least those weren't all 50% more pricy. Makes me really, really wish Amazon would ship stuff to Canada (other than books and CDs anyway). Their prices are just so much more competitive.

Well, we bought our crib last night! (The Ikea Gulliver if anybody is curious.) Seems like Canadian stores have a huge gap in the market between basic, well-made sturdy cribs, and well-made, sturdy, crazy expensive cribs. There's no middle ground--or rather, there's a middle ground but it's filled with cheap junk. So we decided to go for basic, esp because this crib will fit in our room and bigger ones won't. I've made the mistake of looking at bedding, instead of just sticking to my guns and only looking at fitted sheets. We want bright, cheerful and multi-colour. I really like this set from Skip Hop and this one from Sweet Kyla. I do like to make things complicated for myself though... the Skip Hop set has way more stuff in it than I need (ie bumper pads--but at least it comes with two sheets), and the Sweet Kyla set isn't even in stores yet. A friend of mine just bought sheets and made the blanket to go with it. I think it's time to go back to my mantra. "Jen, you don't have time to make stuff." LOL Even if I did, my sewing machine is out of commission.

What about THIS set? I find it to be very gender neutral.

Yeah, I saw that one too. The brown is a bit much for my taste, but the pattern is definitely pretty... and I like the embroidery. ETA: I have to keep reminding myself that a crib set isn't going to decorate the nursery for the first 6 months anyhow, since the crib will be in our room anyway.

Jen, HERE is the bedding we chose for our baby boy's room. We will be using navy and red as the primary accent colors, kind of like what you had in mind.

I like that set, Bethany. It definitely says "toddler on the move" more than "shhh... baby is sleeping!" so there's lots of longevity with a pattern like that. I'm starting to almost (but not quite) regret not knowing the sex of the baby... but then, I would want a set that would work for more than one child anyhow.

It is unreal how indecisive I can be! It took FOREVER for me to commit to a diaper bag. My first thought was to go for a backpack style. Then I saw how much they are and refused to pay that amount. Then I thought I wanted something big with lots of compartments because I know I'll use them. THEN I found this CUTE bag on ebay that isn't LLARRGGEE, but big. I wanted to get something cute. I already have a large black bag that fits everything i could ever need, but hits everyone as i walk by. I also have a red one that I don't like because the straps are shorter and it's harder to carry. Sooo I decided to go with the bag I found adorable and just figured I'd use the ugly black bag when I needed LLLAAARRRGGEEE - knowing there will be a day that large/medium is more my taste. I got this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150410742159&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT The price is really really REALLY good compared to what i'd pay brand new. She sent me pictures of the inside and outside. Lots of compartments.

I'm not indecisive; I just don't want to think about diaper bags. Besides, while I'd love a cute girly bag, I can't see myself getting a diaper bag DH would be disinclined to carry. Started with registering yesterday; feeling completely overwhelmed, even though it was good to get it started. *sigh* Why can't I just press a button that will tell me exactly what I need, and (more importantly) where to go buy it? Babies R Us pretty much has a monopoly here... seems like nobody else has any kind of decent selection, except the independent baby shops, which are better service-wise but more expensive. At least we've decided on a car seat: the Graco Snugride 32 (or 35 if we get it at Babies R Us, since they don't carry the 32). I'm 5'8", and at 5'11" DH is the shortest guy in his family, so we figure it's a fair bet out baby will outgrow a 29" seat much faster. We won't buy it for another couple of weeks though--most of the shops have short return policies on car seats, so we'll have to buy it right before a car-seat-adjusting clinic.
