I recently served at a kids Bible camp and noticed at least 4 older women that had male type hair cuts. What is with that? My mom is in her 80s and she still looks like a woman. I cannot imagine being married later in life with a woman who has a similar hair cut as I do...

I'd agree with you there are some very very short styles that do not look so appealing to me, but that's my personal preference. Just as it may be a man's personal preference that he likes his wife's hair that short.

Also you've forgotten to take into account many of the women may have gone through medical issues that have made it hard for them to grow hair or they are stuck in a short style as they wait to recover.

Plus I doubt you've ever tried to juggle kids, work, marriage, etc. etc. and still have time to do your hair.

I didn't realize that men had laid claim to certian hair styles. What makes a hair style "male"?

As women age they don't typically go bald. Their hair does thin, though. A very short haircut suits the thinner hair better than something long. Some ladies keep a full head of hair and long hair can still look good on them. I personally don't like the over permed curly heads that were popular with older ladies when I was a kid. That was another attempt to make thinning hair look fuller.

It depends on what you mean by a boys hair cut. I have short hair, but I definately dont look like a boy. I am 54 and its my opinion that nearly all older women suit short hair styles and not longer hair.

I know what you mean. I've seen women who have bad cuts that make them look very masculine. There are short hair cuts that look very feminine and there are ones that look like a man's hair cut. Also, depending on body type and facial features, there are certain styles that would normally look manly on some women but on a very feminine looking women it works well (i.e. women with delicate, dainty facial features or who have a very obviously feminine form). Some women, from the back, look just like a man from the head up. IMO women should look like women and men should look like men.

This lady looks wonderful (imo) with a short cut.

That's what I was saying.... Judi Dench has a very feminine face, delicate features, and isn't so overweight or underweight that you can't tell she's a woman if she's wearing gender neutral clothes.

I wouldn't go that short but it's not one of those manly haircuts I was thinking of. It's pixie(ish) on her.

I know a few who must cut their own hair with electric clippers. I do not think they care whether or not you or I or anyone else finds it particularly attractive, I think they are just sick and tired of fooling with their hair.

Don't let it worry you.

I'm 48 and my hair is short, very short.
I'm also overweight, very overweight.

Why do I keep it short?
Because I like it, my husband likes it, and I can.

Any more questions?

I'm 44 with very short, spiked gray hair. IMO long hair doesn't look good on anyone past 30. The weight makes the face sag and look tired and worn out. I'm none of that. Even if I put on my husbands clothes, I'd never look like a man either!

I know this is about short hair but there are lots of women out there who are over 30 and they look gorgeous with long hair.

But to answer the op it's probably mainly because it requires less maintenance when it's really short.

Whether or not you look good/better/worse with short hair is not dependent on age, but on the shape of your face.

I could never carry off short hair--I need the hair to give length to my face. Others don't and can carry it off--more power to them!

I'll bet they save a fortune just from hair products alone

Why don't you ask them?

I've got some older friends with the spikey cuts and they said they love it cause it's trendy, low maintenance and no worries.

I've also heard a couple of them say they don't need to wear their hair long any more to attract men since they're mostly widows and have zero desire to marry again and since men are normally the ones loving the longer locks, they don't need to worry themselves with it.

I don't know why the OP thinks they look like men...my short-cropped friends are all most definitely women with the clothes, make-up and girlie stuff.

Because it's their hair and they can. Maybe they don't want to bother anymore. I don't notice Willie Nelson asking for permission to wear braids either.

What I find funny is when people say 'why do you want to wear a bun? it makes you look like an old lady!' when I haven't seen more than a few older women with long hair & buns (and almost all of them looked very chic) in my entire life...and I'm in my late '30s! It's a cartoon stereotype from a different age. I think short hair is very common on older women in our society (permed or unpermed).

I like donkdom's idea; Ask a woman why she has short hair. She may give you an answer like..When my hair is short is so much eaiser to take care of then when it is long.

If you can't imagine yourself being married to some who has a certain haircut then don't they have someone who marry them.

I've gone back and forth with middle of my back length and really short since I was in my 20s.

I don't think I look good in long hair, and short hair fits my personality better.

And, there is absolutely NO WAY I could ever be considered masculine looking.

Lots of short haircuts look feminine but there are some that just don't. Like Kate Gosselin's hair looked feminine and it was short. The long bangs saved it from looking like a man's cut. Short permed old lady hair looks feminine too.

I would agree that her cut looks good. This is not the type of cut i am asking about. I see women with real boyish hair cuts. almost flat tops, butch etc.

I see it strange that some Christain women wish to look gender neutral.

I can think of one woman right offhand that fits the type of haircut you are talking about.

She is the mother of four grown children and grandmother of I don't know how many. She is a widow and is not looking for another husband. She is ill and doesn't have the energy or inclination to style her hair every day, so she just pretty much shaves it off. Or, rather, her daughter does it for her.

Ya know, hair takes time and work. Himself gets out of the shower, runs a comb through his hair and is out the door in under ten minutes. I envy that sometimes. I can easily see why the woman I described above has her hair the way it is.

What I don;t see is why it should matter to anyone.

I agree Ps103 but you've been around here longer than I have been around longer than me and we've both seen some folks who think this is of vital importance and outwardly shows our relationship with God. But I am not suggesting this of the OP. He's probably just curious. Or nosy, Or just striking up conversation, or wanting to open a hair salon, or really really bored.

I know plenty of women with short hair but none of them look like men. They all look very feminine, just as those with long hair do. I like short hair, its stylish and neat and can look very attractive indeed.

Well right now my hair is short, but no one has ever called me "Sir", so I guess people can still tell I'm a woman... whew. I've never been gender neutral, nor wanted to be.
