Cullman pastor protests underwear packaging Okay....sometimes I MUST make fun of my home state. Just to clarify. I found a pic of the underwear package, but it was on a site that I wasn't familiar with so I didn't take the time to screen the site for bad stuff. It is a typical underwear packet. The picture is a shot from the stomach to about the knees of someone wearing a dark navy pair of briefs. No seductive pose, not tight. Just underwear. I have family in the Cullman area, and between meth labs, drug abuse, unemployment, people losing their homes, etc. SURELY there are more pressing matters than a package of underwear with a picture of....UNDERWEAR on the front.

From the article: “On a few of the packages they were very pornographic in the way they were dressed, in skimpy underwear, so I went to the manager and asked her if she thought it was inappropriate to be displayed.” Um. How else does one model the underwear in the packaging?

I don't know....did this man not ever see a Sears catalog from the 1960's? This is one of those things that falls under, "If it bothers you, don't look." What's interesting is that the men's underwear picture was such a big deal....but he didn't seem to have a problem with women's underwear packaging. I have heard from friends who live in that area still that his church is very.....strict. That's all I'll say about that.

Yeah, I saw it on the local news as well. I didn't see the pic, but...I wonder how an underwear ad has people in it that are too scantily clad. That's kind of what underwear models do, and underwear is usually not made of much (although some underwear has more material than others). Unless something was showing, I think it should have been left alone... I could see a better argument be made for women's ads showing cleavage.

Personally I would rather know what it looks like before I buy it. That way I know if it is skimpy or not. But it is easier to come down on this sort of thing rather than a meth lab right next door to the congregation. After all, you rarely see pictures of meth labs. Although we should be looking at the photos of folks who have the ill effects of the drug.

It sounds like a typical package of underwear. Sounds like this pastor was a little over-zealous.

Well, three things aftter reading the article: Somebody has too much time on their hands if they are wandering aroudn the underwear aisle. Pick a pair that will fit and move on. Seriously, though, as much as it pains me to admit it, there had to be other complaints. Walmart corporate would not pull the underwear from all their stores (which is what the article indicated) for one nut down in SC. The store manger interviewed in the article also said as much. Apparently it's a slow news month down there....

The article indicated that the pastor was the one who made several more complaints in the following weeks. Now not knowing exactly what brand of underwear it was that was pulled I can't be certain that the whole of Walmart pulled the product, but I'm venturing a guess that it was only this one store that got rid of it to appease the pastor. Personally I want to know what the underwear looks like before I get it home. For example what with the different styles of boxers on the market the wording "Boxers" alone doesn't cut it. Is it boxer briefs, boxers with a button on the fly, briefs with or without a fly, etc. It has nothing to do with slow news, it has everything to do with where this pastor's priorities are. Unless of course his church has eliminated poverty and hunger. drug use and unemployment, and is satisfied that everyone in the community has adequate housing. But I kinda doubt it.

The brand is Hanes. And yes, the pastor basically hounded that manager, and then one day all those pairs were missing from the shelves. If you have ever seen a sear catalog, J C Penney Catalog, K-mart insert in the paper or Wal mart insert in the paper, you have seen this underwear. No weird poses, not overly tight. Just underwear, part of the legs, and part of the tummy. I personally think it's MORE modest than the ones with the whole guy on there, given everybody that "aren't I cute" look The reason this bothers me is because it perpetuates that idea that Christians are a bunch of exteme bullies who want to ban everything on earth. Remember Tinky Winky? And I remember someone in our town wanting every church to sign a petition against NYPD Blue. Now understand, I grew up in the no dancing, no alcohol, no secular music, t-shirt over your swim suit, uber-conservative SBC church. And even our pastor wouldn't do the petition. He said that it was time for Christians to stop being "against" everything and be FOR Jesus. I just don't think an underwear package is something to get your shorts in a wad about (I'm so funny!) But, if you understood more about this particular pastor's church and teachings, I guess it makes sense....I guess.

Another reason why Alabama needs to secede from the union. If Gen. Sherman had had a better sense of direction, we would'nt be having some of these issues. I don't know, people in Georgia drive S L O W. Driving I-95 both ways through Georgia to Florida last spring it was easily the slowest state I ever drove through, ever in my life. I told my wife I am convinced that the reason Sherman burned the state down to the ground is because people there moved so slow that they couldn't get out of his way fast enough. That was the most miserable part of that trip. I have never seen such speed differences on a highway ever in my life.

He got drunk and went the wrong way.

Yeah, right. Long johns in the Texas summer heat. I'll whistle Yankee Doodle before I do that!
